Boğaziçi University has been working on subjects which have impacts on our future; such as sustainablity, renewable energy and recycling and has prepared a Green Campus Master Plan for Kilyos Sarıtepe Campus, in order to be Sustainable Green Campus.
Boğaziçi University Wind Power Plant (BÜRES) is the energy part of Green Campus Master Plan. By the sake of the BÜRES, the university intended to produce the electricity needed at The Sarıtepe Campus which is set in 1.2 million m2 area and including more than 1200 people. Another aim of the university is to understand today’s wind power plants’ technologies and to complete deficiencies by research and development.
Boğaziçi University has made feasibility studies in 2009 and according to feasibility studies, BU has been understood that the project can be applicable. After that, BU has made environmental impact evaluation (ÇED) application and got the approval. In between 2012- 2013, Thanks to government policy which increase upper limit of unlicensed plants from 500 KW to 1 MW, BU decided to apply BURES project. In December 2013, after the project design process; Enercon 900 KW E-44 Turbine has been chosen. Then, the process of construction has started and the completion of project has been in December 2014.
As part of the project, a real time watching system using more than 100 sensors have been established and academic studies has started.
For the sake of BÜRES, Boğaziçi University Sarıtepe Campus became the world’s first university campus producing its entire electricity need and more from a wind energy converter owned and operated by the University. Through the wind power plant, producing forty percentage more of yearly energy consumption, The University expect to 900 ton carbon, 1 million KWH energy and 500.000 TL budget saving per year.
